People routinely stop by the CRM garage asking if we’ve got a line on any classic bikes for winter projects, restorations or just plain riding. And while there’s plenty of websites offering classic rides of various descriptions (and quality) auctions are still, by far, your best bet for finding well-loved, carefully selected vintage motorcycles. Just such an occasion is quickly approaching on Saturday, October 18th as Spencer David Auctions is placing an incredible array of dirt, street and competition-ready machines for auction in White Hall, Maryland. The sale will include an array of motorcycle memorabilia as well, with racing leathers, cool vintage helmets, framed posters, biking luggage and loads of other riding accessories.
The bits, bikes and bobs going under the gavel are part of an estate sale from the late Steve Dance, a prominent off-road enthusiast who worked with the J. Wood and Co. Auction team for several years. His half-century in the motorcycle industry covered many eras and genres, reflected in the vast array of machines that will be sold during the auction. We’re particularly jazzed by several classic Triumph twins on offer, with our fave being a 1951 TR5 Trophy dual-sport bike, complete with sprung saddle, rigid rear suspension and recent axle-to-axle restoration.
Bidding will open Saturday morning on a choice Rickman Metisse special, powered by a Triumph T120 engine. The featherweight British off-road racer is ready to ride and features one of the Rickman Brother’s patented, nickel-plated frames and competition-ready Ceriani forks.
Searching for a rare, classic roadracer?
Dig on this 1994 BMW R1100 RSL racer from the Battle of the Legends series held from 1992 to 1996. The races brought some of the biggest names in two-wheeled competition out of retirement to face off aboard identically-prepared BMW Boxer twins at several AHRMA vintage events. This 1994 Battle of The Legends bike was ridden by Don Castro, a Triumph Factory Rider through 1971, when he then joined the Yamaha team. In 1974, Don upset Kenny Roberts to win the 100-mile lightweight race and his former mount was purchased and ridden by Steve Dance and the bike has not only been drained of gas and stored in Museum Condition for the last few years, the lucky top-bidder will also receive race-day flags and memorabilia from the series.
